Graduating from Durham University with Second (Upper) Division Class Honours, Derek Wong is a practice trainee at our firm, expected to be called to the bar in 2022.

Derek has a keen passion for discovering and embracing different perspectives in life and demonstrates this through his interactions with clients. He approaches all matters with a warm heart and an open mind, never failing to build strong connections with clients. Derek has cultivated such an ethos through his many diverse experiences as Chairperson of a Uniformed Group (Police Corps), Leader in a Student Council, Rugby Vice-Chairperson, and President of the Durham University Singapore Society.

Derek has a keen interest in intellectual property law, exemplified by his university dissertation which discusses the proper role of ethics and morality in the regulation of scientific development within the patent systems of the U.S.A., E.U., and China, by examining existing and hypothetical models of incorporating ethics and morality into the context of patentability. He had also completed multiple internships focused on Intellectual Property litigation at Bird & Bird ATMD LLP, Robinson LLC and O.C. Queen Street LLC, where he had assisted in trademark, copyright and patent litigation. Derek also gained experience in insurance law during his internship at Whitefern LLC.

Derek’s training at Phoenix Law Corporation has seen him through the preparation of numerous submissions and trials for Criminal and Civil cases, with litigation at the forefront of his experience. Achieving a Distinction for Evidence in Part A of the Bar Examinations of Singapore, Derek has a keen eye for nuances in every matter and never fails to find an answer for every legal issue he faces.

  • Submitting novel points of law in a million-dollar claim at the Court of Appeal Singapore
  • Mounting a claim for $1,621,000 at the High Court of Singapore
  • Defending against a capital criminal charge at the High Court of Singapore
